Sleep is something we use every day, but many times we do not respect it. We think sleep is only a normal habit. We think it is just closing our eyes at night and waking up in the morning. But in reality, sleep is a great blessing from Allah.
Sleep gives rest to our body. It heals our mind. It gives us new energy. It prepares us for a new day, a new journey, and a new chance to do better.
When we complete our sleep properly, we feel fresh, active, and ready. But when we do not sleep well, we feel tired, weak, lazy, angry, and low in energy. This shows that sleep is not a small thing. It is one of the ways Allah takes care of us every single day.
Sleep Is a Sign from Allah
Allah created the day for work and effort, and He created the night for rest. This is a mercy from Allah. Our body cannot continue without rest. Our mind cannot stay strong without sleep. Even our heart, muscles, and brain need this peaceful time.
In the Quran, Allah mentions sleep as one of His signs. It teaches us that sleep is not only a physical need, but also a spiritual reminder.
Every night, when we sleep, Allah gives us a small example of death. Our eyes close. Our body becomes silent. We do not know what is happening around us. Then, by the mercy of Allah, we wake up again.
When we wake up, we receive a new day, a new date, new energy, and a new chance to return to Allah.
Every Morning Is a New Chance
When Allah wakes us up after sleep, it means our life is not finished yet. It means Allah has given us another opportunity.
Another chance to pray.
Another chance to ask forgiveness.
Another chance to help someone.
Another chance to correct our mistakes.
Another chance to become a better Muslim.
Many people slept last night, but they did not wake up today. So when we wake up, we should not start the day with complaints. We should start with gratitude.
We should say Alhamdulillah because Allah returned our soul and gave us another day to live.
Sleep Reminds Us About Death
One day, every person will sleep a sleep from which they will not wake up in this world. That will be our death. After that, we will be raised again and stand before Allah with our deeds.
This is why sleep is a powerful reminder.
Every night before sleeping, we should think:
“What if this is my last night?”
“Did I pray my salah?”
“Did I hurt someone?”
“Did I ask Allah for forgiveness?”
“Am I ready to meet Allah?”
This does not mean we should be afraid in a negative way. It means we should become careful, humble, and sincere.
Sleep teaches us that life is temporary. Waking up teaches us that Allah is giving us another chance.
The Sunnah Way Before Sleeping
Islam teaches us beautiful manners before sleep. A Muslim should not sleep like a person who has no purpose. We should sleep with remembrance of Allah.
Before sleeping, try to do these good actions:
- Make wudu before sleeping if possible.
- Clean your bed before lying down.
- Sleep on your right side.
- Recite the bedtime dua.
- Recite Ayat al-Kursi.
- Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas.
- Ask Allah for forgiveness.
- Forgive people in your heart.
- Sleep with the intention to wake up for Fajr.
These small actions can turn our sleep into worship.
Dua Before Sleeping
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to remember Allah before sleeping.
Arabic:
بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Transliteration:
Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya
Meaning:
In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.
This dua is short, but very deep. It reminds us that our life and death are in the hands of Allah. We sleep by His name, and we wake up only by His permission.
Dua After Waking Up
When we wake up, we should not forget Allah. The first words on our tongue should be words of gratitude.
Arabic:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ
Transliteration:
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur
Meaning:
All praise is for Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.
This dua teaches us that waking up is not guaranteed. It is a gift from Allah.
What We Should Do Before Sleep
Before sleeping, we should try to end the day in a clean and peaceful way.
1. Pray Isha
Do not sleep without praying Isha. Salah is more important than any work, mobile phone, movie, or conversation.
2. Ask Allah for Forgiveness
Before sleeping, say Astaghfirullah. Maybe we made mistakes during the day. Maybe we spoke harshly. Maybe we wasted time. Maybe we forgot Allah. So we should ask Him to forgive us.
3. Forgive Others
Do not sleep with hate in your heart. If someone hurt you, try to leave the matter to Allah. A peaceful heart gives peaceful sleep.
4. Keep Your Phone Away
Many people destroy their sleep because of mobile phones. They scroll for hours and then complain that they feel tired. Respect your sleep by reducing screen time before bed.
5. Sleep with Good Intention
A believer can even earn reward while sleeping if the intention is good. Sleep with the intention that you are resting so you can wake up for Fajr, work honestly, serve your family, and worship Allah better.
What We Should Avoid Before Sleep
There are some things we should avoid before sleeping because they harm our body, mind, and soul.
1. Do Not Sleep After Sinning Without Tawbah
If you made a mistake, do not delay repentance. Ask Allah for forgiveness before sleeping.
2. Do Not Sleep While Angry
Anger makes the heart heavy. Try to calm yourself. Make dua. Remember that this life is short.
3. Do Not Waste the Night
Night is for rest and worship. It should not be wasted completely in useless scrolling, gossip, arguments, or sinful content.
4. Do Not Ignore Fajr
Sleeping late often makes people miss Fajr. A sleep that makes us miss salah is not a blessing; it becomes a loss.
5. Do Not Sleep Without Remembering Allah
A Muslim’s night should end with Allah’s name and the morning should begin with Allah’s praise.
Sleep Is Healing for the Body and Mind
Allah made sleep a natural medicine for us. During sleep, the body repairs itself. The mind becomes fresh. Energy returns. Stress becomes lighter. This is why, after good sleep, we feel like a new person.
Every morning is like a small rebirth.
A new day.
A new opportunity.
A new hope.
A new chance to come closer to Allah.
So we should not treat sleep as something useless. We should respect sleep because it is part of Allah’s mercy.
A Simple Night Routine for Muslims
Here is a simple routine you can follow before sleeping:
Pray Isha.
Make wudu.
Clean your bed.
Recite Ayat al-Kursi.
Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.
Read the dua before sleeping.
Ask Allah to forgive you.
Make intention to wake up for Fajr.
Sleep on your right side.
This routine is simple, but it can bring peace into your night and barakah into your morning.
Final Reminder: Respect Your Sleep
Sleep is not just rest. Sleep is a message.
It reminds us that we are weak.
It reminds us that Allah is in control.
It reminds us that death is real.
It reminds us that waking up is a mercy.
So from today, let us respect our sleep. Let us sleep with the name of Allah. Let us wake up with gratitude. Let us use every new morning as a fresh chance to do good deeds.
One day, we will sleep our final sleep in this world. Then we will wake up for the real meeting with Allah.
May Allah make our nights peaceful, our mornings blessed, and our final return beautiful.
Ameen.
