The Day of Judgment is one of the most important beliefs in Islam. It is the day when every person will be raised from the dead and held accountable for their actions. On that day, Allah will judge every human being with complete justice.

Muslims believe that the Day of Judgment will certainly come. However, no human being knows its exact date or time. Only Allah knows when it will happen.

Allah says in the Quran:

“They ask you, O Prophet, regarding the Hour, ‘When will it be?’ Say, ‘That knowledge is only with my Lord. He alone will reveal it when the time comes.’”
Quran 7:187

Islam teaches us about several signs that will appear before the Day of Judgment. These signs are reminders. They encourage us to reflect on our lives, correct our mistakes, and prepare for the Hereafter through faith, repentance, prayer, and good deeds.

This article explains the signs of the Day of Judgment based on the Quran and authentic Islamic teachings.

What Is the Day of Judgment?

The Day of Judgment is also known as Yawm al-Qiyamah in Arabic. It is the day when the life of this world will end and the life of the Hereafter will begin.

Every person who has ever lived will be brought back to life. Each person will stand before Allah and answer for their beliefs, words, intentions, and actions.

Allah says:

“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”
Quran 99:7–8

The Day of Judgment is not only a warning. It is also a source of hope. People who faced injustice in this world will receive justice. Those who sincerely believed in Allah, repented for their sins, and performed good deeds will be rewarded by His mercy.

Can Anyone Predict the Date of the Day of Judgment?

No. Islam clearly teaches that the exact time of the Day of Judgment is known only to Allah.

Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah alone has the knowledge of the Hour.”
Quran 31:34

Throughout history, some people have tried to predict the end of the world by using dates, calculations, dreams, or current events. Muslims should avoid such claims. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did not give a specific date for the Day of Judgment.

The signs are not given so that people can create fear or make predictions. They are given so that people can become more aware of their responsibilities before Allah.

What Are the Signs of the Day of Judgment?

The signs of the Day of Judgment are generally divided into two categories:

  1. Minor signs
  2. Major signs

The minor signs appear over a long period of time. Some of them appeared during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Others appeared later, and some may continue to appear.

The major signs are extraordinary events that will happen closer to the Day of Judgment.

It is important to speak carefully about these signs. Some events are clearly mentioned in authentic sources. Other claims found online may be based on weak reports, personal opinions, or speculation.

Minor Signs of the Day of Judgment

1. The Coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

The arrival of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is itself one of the signs that the Day of Judgment is approaching.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“I and the Hour have been sent like these two.”

He then joined his index finger and middle finger together.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

This does not mean that people can calculate the date of the Day of Judgment. It means that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final messenger and that no new prophet will come after him.

2. The Splitting of the Moon

The Quran mentions the splitting of the moon as a sign.

Allah says:

“The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split.”
Quran 54:1

Muslims believe that this miracle happened during the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It was a sign for the people who witnessed it.

3. Knowledge Will Decrease and Ignorance Will Spread

One of the signs is that true religious knowledge will decrease as knowledgeable scholars pass away. Ignorance will become more common.

The Prophet ﷺ explained that Allah does not remove knowledge by simply taking it away from people’s hearts. Instead, knowledge is reduced when scholars die. When people cannot find reliable scholars, they may follow unqualified leaders who give incorrect answers.

This teaching is found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Today, information is available everywhere, especially online. However, having access to information is not the same as having wisdom or authentic knowledge. Muslims should learn Islam from the Quran, authentic Sunnah, and trustworthy scholars.

4. Dishonesty and Betrayal Will Increase

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that trustworthiness would decrease.

People may become less honest in business, relationships, leadership, and daily life. Some people may be given responsibilities even though they are not qualified or trustworthy.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, then wait for the Hour.”
Sahih al-Bukhari

This is a reminder for Muslims to value honesty. A believer should be truthful even when dishonesty appears to be easier or more profitable.

5. Murder and Violence Will Increase

Another sign is the increase of killing and violence.

The Prophet ﷺ spoke about a time when killing would become widespread. In some cases, the killer may not fully understand why they killed, and the victim may not understand why they were killed.

This does not mean that every war or violent event proves that the Day of Judgment is immediately about to happen. Violence has existed throughout history. The lesson is that human life is sacred and must never be treated lightly.

Allah says:

“Whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity.”
Quran 5:32

6. Time Will Seem to Pass Quickly

The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that time would pass rapidly.

Many people feel that days, months, and years move very quickly. Some scholars have explained this sign as a reduction in the blessing of time. A person may be busy throughout the day but still feel that little meaningful work has been completed.

This sign reminds us to use our time wisely. Life is limited, and every day is an opportunity to worship Allah and benefit others.

7. Competition in Building Tall Structures

In the famous Hadith of Jibreel, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that one of the signs would be that barefoot and poor shepherds would compete in constructing tall buildings.

This hadith is found in Sahih Muslim.

The hadith is often discussed in relation to major changes in wealth and society. However, Muslims should avoid making overly confident claims about specific buildings, cities, or timelines. The main lesson is that social conditions can change dramatically and that worldly competition can distract people from the Hereafter.

8. Wealth Will Become Widespread

Some authentic narrations mention that wealth will increase to the point that it may become difficult to find someone willing to accept charity.

Islam does not teach that wealth is automatically bad. Money can be a blessing when it is earned honestly and spent responsibly.

The problem begins when wealth makes a person arrogant, ungrateful, or careless about the needs of others.

9. Open Immorality Will Increase

Another sign is that sinful behaviour will become more common and may even be treated as normal or acceptable.

Islam teaches modesty, self-control, and respect for family values. Muslims should not respond to social problems with hatred or harshness. Instead, they should protect their own conduct, guide their families with wisdom, and treat others respectfully.

A believer should remain firm in faith while also showing good character.

10. False Prophets and Liars Will Appear

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that false claimants to prophethood would appear.

Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet.

Allah says:

“Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets.”
Quran 33:40

Anyone who claims to be a prophet after Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is making a false claim according to Islamic belief.

11. Natural Disasters and Earthquakes Will Increase

Authentic narrations mention an increase in earthquakes.

Natural disasters should remind people of the power of Allah and the weakness of human beings. However, Muslims should not declare that a specific earthquake or disaster is a punishment from Allah unless there is clear evidence. We do not know the unseen reasons behind individual events.

During disasters, the Islamic response is to help those affected, offer support, pray for their safety, and show compassion.

12. People Will Wish for Death Because of Severe Trials

The Prophet ﷺ described a time when trials would become so difficult that a person passing by a grave may wish to be in the place of the deceased.

This teaching is found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Islam does not encourage people to wish for death because of personal hardship. Instead, Muslims are taught to ask Allah for strength, patience, and a good ending.

When life becomes difficult, seeking help is important. A person should speak to trusted family members, qualified scholars, and appropriate professional support services when needed.

Major Signs of the Day of Judgment

The major signs are unusual and extraordinary events. They will occur closer to the Day of Judgment.

A hadith in Sahih Muslim mentions ten major signs. Scholars have discussed the order of some of these signs. Therefore, it is better not to claim an exact sequence unless there is clear evidence.

1. The Appearance of the Dajjal

The Dajjal, also known as the false messiah, will be one of the greatest trials in human history.

He will deceive many people and claim powers that do not belong to him. His trial will be extremely serious because he will confuse people and test their faith.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned Muslims about the Dajjal and taught them to seek protection from his trial.

One recommended practice is to recite and memorise the opening verses of Surah Al-Kahf. Authentic narrations also mention protection through the final verses of Surah Al-Kahf.

Muslims should not casually accuse political leaders, celebrities, or other individuals of being the Dajjal. Such claims require clear evidence and should not be based on rumours.

2. The Return of Prophet Isa عليه السلام

Muslims believe that Prophet Isa, known as Jesus in English, will return before the Day of Judgment.

Islam teaches that Isa عليه السلام is a respected messenger of Allah. Muslims love and honour him. They do not worship him, but they believe in his miraculous birth and his important role near the end of time.

When Isa عليه السلام returns, he will defeat the Dajjal and establish justice by the permission of Allah.

3. The Appearance of Ya’juj and Ma’juj

Ya’juj and Ma’juj, also known as Gog and Magog, are mentioned in the Quran.

Allah says:

“Until when Gog and Magog are let loose, and they rush down from every elevation.”
Quran 21:96

Their appearance will be a major event. They will cause widespread destruction. Eventually, Allah will bring an end to their harm.

Muslims should avoid making unsupported claims that a particular modern nation, ethnicity, or community is definitely Ya’juj and Ma’juj. The Quran and authentic Sunnah do not permit careless accusations.

4. The Smoke

One of the major signs will be the appearance of smoke.

The Quran says:

“Then wait for the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke.”
Quran 44:10

Scholars have discussed details related to this sign. The safest approach is to affirm what is mentioned in the authentic sources without inventing explanations.

5. The Beast of the Earth

A creature known as Dabbat al-Ard, or the Beast of the Earth, will appear.

Allah says:

“And when the decree comes to pass against them, We will bring forth for them a beast from the earth, telling them that the people had no sure faith in Our signs.”
Quran 27:82

The exact nature and appearance of this creature are matters of the unseen. Muslims should believe in what Allah has revealed without creating fictional images or unsupported stories.

6. The Sun Will Rise from the West

One of the clearest major signs is that the sun will rise from the west.

After this sign appears, repentance will no longer be accepted from those who had refused to believe before witnessing it.

The Prophet ﷺ said that the Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west. When people see it, many will believe, but belief at that stage will not benefit those who did not believe earlier.
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim

The lesson is simple: do not delay repentance. A person should return to Allah while there is still time.

7. Three Major Landslides

The hadith in Sahih Muslim mentions three major landslides:

  • One in the east
  • One in the west
  • One in the Arabian Peninsula

These will be extraordinary events and part of the major signs.

8. A Fire That Will Gather People

A major fire will appear and drive people towards their place of gathering.

This is also mentioned among the ten major signs in Sahih Muslim.

The exact details should be left to the authentic sources. Muslims should not connect every wildfire or unusual natural event to this major sign.

What About Imam Mahdi?

Many Islamic narrations mention the coming of Imam Mahdi, a righteous leader from the family of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Many Sunni scholars accept the narrations about Imam Mahdi. However, he is not included in the specific list of ten major signs mentioned in the well-known hadith in Sahih Muslim.

Muslims should be careful because false claimants and misleading rumours have appeared throughout history. No one should follow a person merely because they claim to be Imam Mahdi or because social media posts make dramatic predictions.

Faith should be based on knowledge, not excitement or fear.

Why Did Allah Tell Us About These Signs?

The purpose of learning about the signs is not to become obsessed with predictions.

These signs teach us several important lessons.

1. This World Is Temporary

No matter how advanced society becomes, life in this world will eventually end.

Money, possessions, status, and popularity cannot save a person in the Hereafter. What truly matters is sincere faith and good deeds.

2. Repentance Should Not Be Delayed

A person may think, “I will become more religious later.”

However, nobody knows how long they will live. A wise person asks Allah for forgiveness today, not at an unknown time in the future.

3. Good Character Matters

Preparing for the Day of Judgment includes more than reading about signs.

It means being honest, praying regularly, treating parents kindly, helping people in need, avoiding injustice, and controlling anger.

4. Muslims Should Avoid Rumours

Online videos and social media posts often claim that a major sign has already happened or that the Day of Judgment will occur on a certain date.

Islam does not encourage such speculation. Muslims should check sources carefully and avoid spreading fear without evidence.

How Can a Muslim Prepare for the Day of Judgment?

A Muslim should prepare through daily actions.

Strengthen Your Faith

Learn about Allah, read the Quran, and reflect on its meaning. Faith becomes stronger through knowledge and sincere worship.

Pray Regularly

The five daily prayers are among the most important duties in Islam. Salah keeps a person connected to Allah throughout the day.

Ask Allah for Forgiveness

Everyone makes mistakes. Allah is merciful and accepts sincere repentance.

Repentance includes feeling regret, stopping the sin, asking Allah for forgiveness, and trying not to return to the same mistake.

Perform Good Deeds

Small actions can carry great value. Helping someone, speaking kindly, giving charity, and supporting family members are all meaningful deeds.

Fulfil the Rights of Others

A person should not only focus on private worship. Islam also teaches us to return debts, avoid cheating, speak truthfully, and apologise when we have harmed someone.

Read Surah Al-Kahf

Reading Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays is a beneficial practice. Muslims are also encouraged to memorise verses from this surah as protection from the trial of the Dajjal.

No. Only Allah knows the exact time of the Day of Judgment.

Fear encourages a person to avoid wrongdoing. Hope reminds a person that Allah is merciful and forgiving.

What is the best way to prepare?

The best preparation is sincere faith, regular prayer, repentance, good character, charity, and fulfilling the rights of others.

Conclusion

The Day of Judgment is certain, but its exact time is known only to Allah.

Islam teaches us about minor and major signs so that we can reflect, repent, and live responsibly. These signs should not lead us towards panic, unsupported theories, or endless predictions.

The most important question is not, “When will the Day of Judgment happen?”

The more useful question is:

“Am I prepared to meet Allah?”

Every day is an opportunity to improve. A person can pray more sincerely, ask Allah for forgiveness, help someone in need, repair a broken relationship, and make better choices.

May Allah guide us, forgive our mistakes, protect us from trials, and grant us a good ending. Ameen.
